#1 Centre of Science and Commerce
HIGH TECH AND GLOBAL PLAYER
Few other regions in Europe can match Stuttgart as a centre of technology and innovation. Some 160,000 companies are based in and around Stuttgart. They include both global players and highly-specialised small and medium-sized businesses – many of them world market leaders in their particular field. There are around 80,000 students in 22 universities, colleges and academies. Fraunhofer Institutes, Max Planck Institutes and other renowned institutions complement the research landscape.
The Stuttgart Region is the cradle of the automobile. Closely linked to this is its prowess in vehicle construction and mechanical and other forms of engineering. In combination with a flourishing IT sector and lively creative industries, the Region has evolved into an innovation location that is one of the most powerful economic regions anywhere in the world. Strong clusters form the basis for a shift of emphasis towards artificial intelligence and digitisation, as well for sustainable energy sources using battery technology, fuel cells and hydrogen. The density of global players and innovative, medium-sized enterprises, combined with the strong research and scientific landscape, are fundamental to the strength of the Region and of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Experience corporate history and the pioneering spirit
The Stuttgart Region is home to countless (family) businesses, from medium-sized companies to global players, whose headquarters are still located in the Region. But not only that – many economically strong enterprises have also founded outstanding museums and galleries. All around Baden-Württemberg's state capital, they invite visitors to experience these global brands at first hand. Whereas some of these institutions focus on their own company history, others stage exhibitions on a variety of art themes.
