Engineering

Traditionally, the engineering sector has always played a leading role in the region's economy. In particular, this branch of the economy owes its outstanding reputation to the manufacture of tools and special-purpose machinery, intelligently combined with product-related services.

With around 66 000 employees (2010) and a turnover of almost 18 billion euros, it is the location's second technological flagship. This includes numerous global leaders, such as the machine tool manufacturers Trumpf, the world's leading producer of industrial paint shop machinery Dürr, the Schuler AG, the Putzmeister Maschinenbau AG or Stihl, Kärcher and Festo. These are all prime examples of the countless highly-innovative engineering companies in the region, primarily typified by medium-sized Swabian companies, whose machinery and equipment guarantee fast, precise and reliable production processes.

Germany's biggest engineering faculty
The location's high standard of expertise in the plant engineering and construction sector is also reflected in the research and training facilities at Stuttgart University, which is home to Germany's biggest engineering faculty, with no fewer than 36 institutes. Esslingen University, too, is renowned for its close contact with the region's engineering industries and for its outstanding engineering courses. Mechatronics, nanotechnology, laser technology and surface technology are just a few of the subjects in which the region's research and development scientists are engaged.

Dynamic initiatives
The regional "Netzwerk für Produktionstechnik Manufuture-BW e.V." is an influential associated network for production technology, consisting of nearly 100 companies, 15 research and educational institutes and several organisations and local competence centres. It operates all over Europe with the aim of creating the factory of the future. The association brings together all the extraordinary potential and expertise of Baden-Württemberg's engineering sector. The Stuttgart Region is represented in the association by the Cluster Initiative for Engineering, set up by the local Office for the Promotion of Trade and Industry. The regional innovation centres for mechatronics, packaging technology and virtual reality link leading knowledge holders in the production technology sector.
